Disney Lorcana continues at a quick pace with releasing new sets for TCG. Ursula’s Return brought an amazing collection of new enchanted cards, but it also offers two completely new starter decks for players starting their journey in Lorcana.
One of them features the beloved Madrigal Family from the Disney movie Encanto. This is a must-have for Lorcana players who are fans of the movie.
Although the Madrigal Magic starter deck didn’t perform too well in our Starter Deck rating, it has some potential. Here’s how to improve Ursula’s Return’s Amber/Amethyst starter deck.

Original deck list for the Amber/Amethyst starter deck from Ursula’s Return
Before we dive into upgrading the Amber/Amethyst starter deck from the Disney Lorcana’s Ursula’s Return set, it would be nice to see what we’ll be working with. The first thing we’ll do is look at the deck’s main strategy and key components.
The theme of the Madrigal Magic starter deck is synergy between the Madrigal family characters. So let’s take a look at this family… Excuse me.
Your main player here is Mirabel Madrigal — Family Gift, who grants additional Knowledge to all your Madrigal characters when she quests. Fortunately, you have plenty of other Madrigals who can benefit from this, like Julieta, who allows you to heal and draw, or Camilo, who can give himself extra Knowledge for a quest up to three.
Isabella Madrigal — Golden Child can be a powerful closer, as her ability allows you to search for four Lore. However, this does not allow other characters to search, so make sure you have an empty board or are ready for a big Challenge push.
The strategy of the Amber/Amethyst starter deck is relatively simple: play Madrigals and flip them sideways. Below is a list of all the cards that come with the deck, and their quantities.
Upgrade for the Ursula’s Return Sapphire/Steel starter deck
For this upgrade of the Amber/Amethyst starter deck, we’ll do everything in a different order. First, we’ll show you the upgrades we made, and then we’ll look at our reasoning for the new additions.
The new Amber/Amethyst deck list for the upgraded Madrigal Magic deck looks like this:
The first thing you’ll probably notice is that we’re not talking about Bruno Madrigal — Shadow Walker, because we replaced him with Bruno Madrigal — Uncle Undercover. He’s simply the better Bruno thanks to his ability to fetch your key Characters and get three Knowledge for it. You just need to set him up correctly.
We still have a total of nine Madrigal characters in the deck that need to be strengthened with Mirabel Madrigal — Family Gift, including newcomer Alma Madrigal — Family Matriarch. She allows you to search your deck for a Madrigal Character and put it on top of the deck, giving you the necessary pieces and interacting with our new Bruno.
We added Madame Mim — Fox as a strong player so you can repeatedly take advantage of certain gaming effects. These include searching for Alma, healing and pulling Juliet, and straining Delores.
Beyond the Madrigals, we added Ursula — Vanessa for cheaper access to Songs. She’s also a change target for Ursula — Bride of Eric, allowing you to look at the opponent’s hand and discard any threatening Actions or Items.
For our own Songs, we added World’s Greatest Criminal Mind to deal with any major threats, Friends on the Other Side for casting, and The Boss is on a Roll. The latter will be crucial for piloting this correctly.
